Sergeant Weston H. Brown
Weston Brown has been employed with the Scottsdale (Arizona) Police Department since 1995, and currently serves as a Sergeant in charge of the Vehicle Crimes Unit. Sergeant Brown served as a lead detective for 8 years in the Vehicle Crimes and Reconstruction Unit. His duties have included investigation/reconstruction of serious injury and fatal collisions, hit and run investigations and commercial motor vehicle code enforcement. Sergeant Brown has attended numerous courses from IPTM, Vetronix, Society of Automotive Engineers and the Collision Safety Institute.
Sergeant Brown has experience instructing courses ranging from basic accident investigation through advanced reconstruction techniques. He has taught for the Arizona Law Enforcement Training Academy, City of Scottsdale, and Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board. Sergeant Brown has published a technical article entitled “Airborne Vehicle Dynamics; A Study Into the Background, Viability and Accuracy of Airborne Speed Estimating.” Sergeant Brown published a peer reviewed technical paper entitled, “Analysis of the GM Sensing and Diagnostic Module in Linear Momentum Collisions: Real Case Analysis.” This was presented at the first annual CDR Users Symposium in Dallas, Texas in February, 2006. This paper was published in the premier issue of “Collision, The International Compendium for Crash Research,” June of 2006. Sergeant Brown assisted in the development of the curriculum of the IPTM EDR Technology course. Sergeant Brown has been qualified and testified numerous times as an expert in Superior Court regarding EDR technology in automobiles for numerous agencies in Arizona. Sergeant Brown was also featured on Discovery Health Channel’s series, “Accident Investigator” for the 2006-2007 season.
He has served as an adjunct faculty member with the University of North Florida (IPTM) since 2005 and has specialized in the field of Pedestrian Crash Investigation and Reconstruction as well as the analysis of Event Data Recorders on passenger vehicles. Weston is also the principal investigator and reconstructionist at Weston Forensic Collision Investigations.
