Description

The presentation will be an overview of New Life Center's statewide Sexual Assault Investigator Training Program. The training program is designed to improve the investigation of adult sexual assault cases in a victim centered, trauma-informed approach.

Violence is a healthcare issue. Forensic Nurse Examiners are crucial in providing unique medical care to patients that have experienced interpersonal violence such as sexual assault, domestic violence, and abuse. The presentation will discuss the role of forensic nurse examiners and provide an overview of the medical-forensic examination. Case studies will also be presented to highlight the importance of collaboration within the community to improve patient outcomes.

Forensic Nurse Educator

HonorHealth - Forensic Nurse Examiners


Samantha Mendez received her Master of Public Health from University of Arizona and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Arizona State University. She has a background in Trauma Critical Care nursing, medical education, and research in health promotion programs. Her professional passions include caring for victims of sexual violence and interpersonal violence, eliminating health disparities, and vulnerable populations such as sex workers and victims of sex trafficking, refugees, and undocumented immigrants. Samantha currently works as the Forensic Nurse Educator for the Forensic Nursing Department at HonorHealth and has been a forensic nurse examiner with the department since 2016. As a forensic nurse examiner, she has experience working with pediatric, adolescent, and adult patients. She has also presented to healthcare professionals, law enforcement, and other community members on topics such as forensic nursing, caring for patients that have been the victim of violence, and healthcare considerations for sex trafficking victims.
