Description

This webinar will cover planning, preparation, and delivery methods to give persuasive closing arguments that will resonate with your juries. It will also discuss closing argument and rebuttal argument structure, components, and organization. The class will include a discussion of persuasive communication and argumentation approaches, including the effective use of visuals. Finally, the class will identify ethical issues associated with closing argument. This webinar is a collaboration between the Arizona Prosecuting Attorneys’ Advisory Council and the California District Attorneys Association.

Joe Chavez has come full circle in his career. Joe started his career as a Deputy District Attorney in the Sacramento County District Attorneys Office, where he completed 70 jury trials to verdict, working his way through the Misdemeanor Bureau, Felony Unit, Domestic Violence Unit, Career Criminal Unit, Major Narcotic Unit, and Adult Sexual Assault Unit. He then joined the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District's Legal Division, where he advised the Fire Board and managers on a wide array of legal issues. Joe subsequently became a Deputy Attorney General and was promoted to Chief of Prosecutions, at the California Attorney Generals Office, where he prosecuted and oversaw the prosecution of Medi-Cal Fraud and Elder Abuse cases. From there he joined the Department of Health Care Services, where he was the legal advisor to investigators, auditors, and medical clinicians investigating Medi-Cal Fraud. Finally, Joe joined the CDAA staff in November 2018 as its Resource Attorney, where he assists prosecutors on a wide array of legal and training topics.
